Read.  Listen.  Explore.  Compose.  Learn.

You have explored the world of villanelles, read a few, and written your own.  Hopefully, you have expanded your view of poetry, incorporating your understanding of villanelles.  Villanelles are often referred to as a rigid form, difficult to master, and they certainly are not as popular as many other forms like sonnets or even haiku.  However, they have a beauty, an artistry, and a sense of expression all their own.  Their unique refrains demand a strong and dynamic tone.  We started this lesson with our essential question, now that you've explored villanelles, you can develop your own answer:  What is the relationship between the refrains of a villanelle and the poem's tone?
